FOSH Year-End Campaign

20 Sunday Dec 2020

Dear Friends,

Nine years ago this month we did our first volunteer event at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington. Although the Covid-19 pandemic and closed access of the Home campus limited us in 2020, we were able to send supplies, virtual well wishes and holiday gifts.

As we enter our 10th anniversary year, we are hopeful to return in 2021 to our past in-person volunteering, community festivals such as July 4 and Fall Fun Fest, and pilot access walking and biking.

Your financial support makes this possible.

Click “donate” on friendsofsoldiers.org or send a check to Friends of the Soldiers Home, P.O. Box 3170, Washington, D.C., 20010.

If you are a federal worker, retiree or member of the military, please select #56535 to donate through the Combined Federal Campaign.

Thank you so much for your support and have a wonderful New Year.

John Hughes

FOSH Chairman

Combined Federal Campaign

The Combined Federal Campaign kicks off Wednesday Sept. 9 and Friends of the Soldiers Home is proudly participating this year for the first time. If you are a federal worker, retiree or member of the military, please select #56535 in the Combined Federal Campaign to support our work.

Our standard set of activities has been to provide our monthly event connecting veterans and volunteers over food, drink and music, hold our three annual campus celebrations that unite residents with their neighbors, and provide gifts such as a flat-screen TV and holiday decorations that add to the quality of life for our friends that served so proudly. We also have a community garden and pilot walking/biking project. With limited access to the campus and residents during coronavirus we continue to provide residents as much as we can – but only with your contribution!

Dear Friends,

Seven years ago, Friends of the Soldiers Home began working to connect veterans of the Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC with the community.

Since then, we organized volunteers more than 300 times for activities. Three annual festivals bring 5,000 community members to campus.

Your financial support makes this possible.

As we prepare to mark Giving Tuesday, consider supporting our year-end campaign by clicking “donate” on friendsofsoldiers.org or with a check to Friends of the Soldiers Home, P.O. Box 3170, Washington, DC 20010.

Your donations help us organize volunteers for events for the elderly veterans, such as Bowling Night and Jingo; they keep our festivals free; and they assist with the cost of food, drink and entertainment at our monthly Saloon Night for residents.

Thanks for your support!

Sincerely,

John Hughes
Chairman and Co-Founder

Six years ago, on Nov. 10, 2011, Friends of the Soldiers Home began working to connect veterans of the Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC with the community.

Since that evening we organized volunteers more than 250 times — now four times each month  — for activities with residents. Three annual festivals bring 5,000 community members to campus.

Your financial support makes this possible.

Please consider a contribution by clicking “donate” on friendsofsoldiers.org or send a check to Friends of the Soldiers Home, Post Office Box 3170, Washington, DC 20010.

Dear Friends,

Five years ago this month, Friends of the Soldiers Home began the effort to connect Veterans of the Armed Forces Retirement Home with their neighbors in Washington, D.C.

Thanks to the support of you and so many others, we have accomplished a great deal.

We held our 200th volunteer event this month and continue regular Jingo, Happy Hour, Bowling and Saloon Night activities with residents each month

We have now hosted 12 community festivals for residents and thousands of others, including Fourth of July, Oktoberfest and Spring Fling

Some of our other recent activities include a trash pickup and the annual volunteer gardening program.

Your help makes all of this possible! Please consider making an online contribution by clicking the “donate” button on our web page, friendsofsoldiers.org, or write a check to Friends of the Soldiers Home, Post Office Box 3170, Washington, DC 20010.

Thank you so much. We appreciate all the support we receive.

Sincerely,

John Hughes
Chairman and Co-Founder

Friends Hold Successful Spring Fundraiser at Annie’s Hardware

Fund raising, Spring Fling

AnniePhotoFriends of the Soldiers Home volunteers cooked delicious hot dogs and greeted supporters at their spring fundraiser held outside Annie’s Hardware on Saturday, April 26. The talk at the event centered on Spring Fling, as the free outdoor festival on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home will be held exactly one week after the fundraiser. Some people who were at Annie’s to buy some hardware stopped to visit, donate and learn about the volunteer work that the Friends do at the Soldiers Home.

Finally, at 3pm when all the hot dogs were sold out, it came time for Annie’s Hardware owner Anne Stom to temporarily leave her busy post at the store’s main cash register and come outside for the big drawing. Anne donated a Weber gas grill that retails for $399 that would be raffled off to a lucky winner. Of course it was only appropriate that Anne herself would reach into the large plastic bin and determine who would soon be grilling in style.

The lucky winner was Constance Durham, who earlier in the day was kind enough to “take a chance” and help Friends of the Soldiers Home. When Constance was reached after the drawing, she said she was stunned, and that she hadn’t won anything before. She promptly came down to the store and picked up her beautiful grill. Anne said Constance was ecstatic.

We want to thank all of our friends and supporters for making the trip down to Annie’s to support our work. We’d also like to thank Annie’s customers who perhaps weren’t planning to donate to a worthy cause when they headed to the store Saturday but took time to show their support. Above all we’d like to thank Anne Stom, who has supported Friends of the Soldiers Home since the very beginning and has shown over and over again how she cares about veterans and her community.

If you weren’t able to come to Annie’s but would still like to show your support, go to friendsofsoldiers.org and click on the “donate” button.

Now that some of the hard work is out of the way, we hope to see you for some fun at Spring Fling on May 3!

Fund raising

The weather forecast outside Annie’s Hardware Saturday is 70 degrees and sunny when Friends of the Soldiers Home holds its Spring Fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the store, 1240 Upshur St. N.W., Washington, D.C.

Come and have a hot dog, buy a t-shirt or buy a chance on a Weber grill that retails for $399!

Fundraisers enable us to host festivals such as Spring Fling at the Soldiers Home on May 3 that are free to members of the public. They also support our volunteer projects for veterans that have costs, such as Saloon Night With Friends, which is very popular with Soldiers Home residents.

We are grateful to everyone who has supported us since our first full year of existence in 2012 and hope that you will continue to do so. We thank Annie’s Hardware for hosting our Spring Fundraiser at the store.

If you can’t make it to Annie’s, remember that you can donate at our website, friendsofsoldiers.org.
