AFRH Garden

The second garden social for residents and volunteers in the green oasis of the Soldiers’ Home occurred last weekend. The socials occur once a month and often feature recently harvested crops. Hot temperatures threatened attendance but a constant breeze and the shade of big trees provided respite. A new activity of sketching and identifying common weeds became the focus of this social. 2015’s growing season has drawn in new faces, young and old.

Saloon NIght with Friends

Wow – what a fun night at this month’s Saloon Night!  Betty Entzminger serenaded us and the lucky residents who attended got a sneak preview of the food coming to 201 Uphsur St in only two weeks!!  Slash Run will be opening later this month and will have burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and a full bar.  Co-owners Gordon Banks and Jackie Greenbaum set up a burger bar with all the fixins at Saloon Night and later set up an ice cream sundae bar!  As if all this wasn’t enough, they announced a 15% discount for all residents of the AFRH at their new restaurant!  We are all excited about spending time with residents and neighbors once Slash Run opens!  Many thanks again to co-owners Jackie and Gordon and all the volunteers who made this night so special!

Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Veterans

Friends of the Soldiers Home rented a bus June 5 to take Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC veterans to a Vietnam Commemoration Day at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. The veterans and Friends volunteers were welcomed by a Navy honor guard and treated to lunch at the Bolling Club. They were then treated to a special exhibition by Navy and Air Force drill teams. The purpose of the event was for active-duty personnel to say thank you to Vietnam veterans who didn’t get the appreciation they deserved after their service decades ago. Friends is grateful to the base for the special day and thankful to those who support the Friends and who made the bus trip possible!
