Soldiers Home resident Ida Simpson, left, and Friends volunteer Lori Lincoln enjoy a moment together at Happy Hour on Aug. 27, 2013 in the community room of the new Scott Building.
Volunteers are the life force of Friends of the Soldiers Home. So far this year, more than 100 people have volunteered at one or more of our events. We are grateful for this support that has brought cheer to veterans and strengthened the community.
Now we are entering our busiest one-month period of the year for volunteering. We’d appreciate if you’d strongly consider jumping on board for one or two of the upcoming six events.
Tuesday, Sept. 24, 6pm-8pm: Happy Hour! We assist disabled veterans in getting to event, serve food and drinks, and socialize.
Tuesday, Oct. 1, 6:30pm-8pm: Saloon Night With Friends. We provide entertainment and tend bar at the Defender’s Inn, and we serve snacks and socialize with veterans
Sunday, Oct. 6, 1pm-5pm: Oktoberfest! Give one or two hours at this second annual community festival, setting up, serving drinks, directing cars, supervising children activities, taking down.
Jingo, Thursday, Oct. 10, 6pm-8pm. We assist disabled residents in getting to Jingo and then we help them play the game.
Band Concert, Sunday, Oct. 13, 1pm-3pm. Special opportunity to serve drinks and snacks to residents at concert by out-of-town big band!
Bike Race, Sunday, Oct. 20, 8am-5:30pm. Volunteers give up to two hours of time serving as crossing guards at this race on the Soldiers Home grounds.
