Entertainment, Saloon NIght with Friends

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, Friends of the Soldiers Home hosted veteran residents to a delightful gathering to listen to the great jazz sounds of Herb Scott and Collin Chambers. In addition to booking the talent, Friends of the Soldiers Home ordered pizza and brought in volunteers to serve the food and drinks, and to socialize. It was indeed a special evening at Defender’s Inn on the Armed Forces Retirement Home campus! If you would like to be part of an upcoming Saloon Night, either to perform or volunteer, write Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

The event occurs the first Tuesday night of each month at 6:30pm. Friends of the Soldiers Home and the community are honored to “give back” to the Home’s fabulous veterans with this special event!

Saloon NIght with Friends

Friends of the Soldiers Home’s Saloon Night series continues to be one of FOSH’s most popular programs. Friends rocked the Defender’s Inn at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington with a patriotic sing-along by acoustic performer Alan Bjerga in July, with a soulful performance by singer Geneva Renee in June, and a rollicking guitar set by Julia Kasdorf in May.

Friends of the Soldiers Home provided pizza and drinks, and FOSH volunteers served the good with a smile — then sometimes hit the dance floor with Soldiers Home residents. The fun continues Tuesday Aug. 6, at 6:30 pm with competitive Team Trivia. FOSH volunteers join wits with residents to see who wins bragging rights by correctly answering challenging questions dreamed up by Zach Hartman. If you would like to be part of the fun and volunteer for this event, contact FOSH Volunteer Coordinator Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

See you at Trivia Night!

Happy Hour

We had a great time at AFRH-W’s monthly Happy Hour event. Thank you to AFRH staff for the opportunity to volunteer at the Soldiers Home. Five Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers helped serve food and drinks to residents and assisted in cleanup after the event. Thank you to the Home’s residents for your service and being so welcoming toward visitors and volunteers!

Happy Hour

Some Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers felt so blessed to be part of the RT Chocolate Lovers’ Social, which took the place of the regular Happy Hour on Feb. 26. Resident Billy White spun tunes and many danced, and volunteers from Catholic University, the Nam Knights and Miss D.C. and Miss Foggy Bottom made the evening extra special. As usual, the AFRH staff did a fantastic job to make the evening memorable.

Thanks to Lori Lincoln, the Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteer coordinator, for all these great photos!

Happy Hour, Volunteering

Friends of the Soldiers Home had a great time Aug. 28 at this month’s version of Happy Hour at Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC. With our long-time partners the Nam Knights, we had a wonderful time. Volunteers appreciated that the joke telling and conviviality was happening in doors at the beautiful, air-conditioned Scott Building rather than outdoors in the 100-degree heat index!

Friends of the Soldiers Home enjoyed a great Chocolate Celebration with residents of the Soldiers Home with, of course, chocolate, but also dancing! Drinks were provided by the Nam Knights, and the chocolate treats were courtesy of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Join FOSH on the last Tuesday evening of each month as we relax and socialize with residents in one enjoyable activity or another. Next: March 27. Write volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com to be part of the fun!

Happy Hour, Volunteering

It was great to see the community and Soldiers Home-DC residents making connections at last night’s Happy Hour! Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers have been heading to Happy Hour for years, always the last Tuesday of each month. Pete from Nam Knights told a few jokes along with the main entertainment of the night — Home staffer Carol, who shared witticisms and stories and held contests. The incomparable resident Ray spun the tunes for all to enjoy. We would love to see you at an upcoming event! Happy Hour

Friends of the Soldiers Home solidified its partnership with Nam Knights Capital Chapter in a festive celebration with residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington on the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 29.

Dozens of residents gathered for food, drink, music and joke telling in the large community room of the Scott Building on the AFRH-Washington campus.

Nam Knights brings in the drinks for the celebration and join FOSH volunteers in mingling and serving treats to the veterans. AFRH staffer Carol Mitchell leads the joke telling while AFRH resident Ray plays the tunes.

The monthly event, called Happy Hour, happens the last Tuesday evening of each month. If you would like to be part of the fun, write FOSH Volunteer Coordinator Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com. This is an outstanding way to connect with many great men and women who served the country and now live in Washington, D.C.

Happy Hour, Nam Knights Capital Chapter, Volunteering

Friends of the Soldiers Home and Nam Knights Capital Chapter love to partner in volunteering for Happy Hour on the last Tuesday evening of the month at Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington. As the photos from the last event show, we finally got a summer opportunity to enjoy Happy Hour on the rooftop of the Scott Building! We were all so glad to be out there, watching the retiring sun, enjoying the breeze, the conversation, the music and so much more. Happy Hour on the rooftop! It couldn’t be better. There’s so much we do with the residents, and for the residents – come and join us. To be part of the fun at the next Happy Hour, write Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.
