It was a lovely evening on Tuesday, May 26, with Happy Hour on the Rooftop. Everyone was glad to sit in the sun, eat some hotdogs and have a soda or a beer. Clearly there was conversation all around – with Friends of the Soldiers Home, and both new and long standing residents. And the number of ‘shout outs’ for answers to the Trivia Quiz was incredible. It’s amazing how sunshine gives us all some spirit. Join us this coming Tuesday for Saloon Night downstairs in the Saloon Bar.

As usual we had great volunteers and a spirited game at Jingo this month! 3 young Marines and friends and family of our volunteer coordinator, Lori Lincoln, helped Friends host another nice event for our neighbors at the Home. After getting off to a slow start, Ms. Bradford took home the night and just won and won and won! The volunteers who helped her went home walking on air too – there is much belief in good luck at Jingo!
Volunteer Denver and Mr. Palmer were enjoying each other’s company as usual, and so much so that they forgot to yell out “Jingo!” as soon as they’d won a game; however, when they discovered the mistake a few calls later, the new winner Chris graciously split the big $10 pot with him. Big prizes all evening: $5 per game, and one $10 restaurant gift card!
Come join us next month – bring one of our veterans a little bit of your luck!

Cinco de Mayo was a festive celebration at this month’s Saloon Night! Friends and veterans mingled over mariachi music and margaritas! We also had tacos, chips, salsa, and guacamole from El Togoroz. There was a particularly strong showing from some of our female veterans this month and of course all the regulars were there, too! Next month we’re expecting burgers from the coming-soon on Upshur St burger joint called Slash Run, which will open across from the gates of the Home in mid-June!

More than 700 people came to the Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC campus on a glorious afternoon May 2 for the third annual Spring Fling. Community visitors, and the highest number of Home residents who have attended the event yet, enjoyed live jazz, cold beer, delectable food trucks and near-perfect temperatures in the 70s. Loads of children who came enjoyed fun activities such as climbing on a fire truck, flying kites, playing putt-putt golf, kicking balls or simply running on the vast driving range open to their whims. Some “characters” from the Kirov Academy of Ballet also provided fun for kids. The nature walk remained a popular attraction for the event, as roughly 100 people roamed near the ponds to hear naturalists describe the significance of the site. We would like to thank everyone who came out for the day, and we thank the residents and staff of the Home for being so supportive of this event. We also thank the many Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers who came out to make this event such a success!
