dccx-photoTop athletes in the sport of cyclo-cross will descend on the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington on Saturday and Sunday for the 10th annual DCCX. DCMTB, a grass-roots team of mountain bikers that puts on the race, are great supporters of Friends of the Soldiers Home and we are proud to be involved for the fifth consecutive year. Friends will be hosting a hospitality tent for Soldiers Home residents on Sunday afternoon, and we will be volunteering at the race by helping with parking and serving as crossing guards on Saturday and Sunday. If you want to help us out volunteering, particularly on Sunday morning, write volunteerfriendsofsoldiers (at) gamil (dot) com. Otherwise, it should be a beautiful weekend, so come on out and enjoy the free races! For more information, visit the DCMTB website, https://dcmtb.org/dccx2016/

Friends of the Soldiers Home provided some nice front-row seating for Home residents at a hospitality tent on a beautiful day at one of the biggest BMX bike races on the East Coast. Friends volunteers, as well as members of DCMTB and Crosshairs cycling, teamed up to collect donations and provide services that benefit the AFRH residents at the race held last weekend at the Home’s campus. Catholic University student nurses made hearty chili with corn bread to serve the residents who came to the event. This was a win-win all around as everyone enjoyed the chili and the races on a beautiful day on the campus! Story and photos courtesy of Mike Potvin.

A dozen Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington residents came down to the southwest corner of their 250-acre campus Oct. 19 to enjoy free hot chili, chips, cookies and drinks supplied by Friends of the Soldiers Home. The goal of the Friends VIP Hospitality Tent was to encourage residents to come out and enjoy an annual activity that has been happening on their campus for several years — the DCCX Cyclocross Race. The chilly day undoubtedly kept some residents from venturing out, but those who did enjoyed watching the race in the company of friends!

Pictured in photo below, left to right, residents Lloyd Bylund and Phil Ford, and volunteers Zach Hartman, Lori Lincoln and Jeffrey Knudsen and Jeffrey’s daughter Autumn; in the other photo, the Friends banner marked the hospitality tent.
