Community clean ups

On Saturday Nov. 4, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution Freedom Hill Chapter in McLean, Virginia partnered with Friends of the Soldiers Home to pick up 13 trash bags worth of litter from the otherwise pristine grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington. This was the second year in a row FOSH partnered with another community organization to keep the historic home for veterans free of rubbish that collects along the fence line on the far southwest portion of the campus. This portion of the campus abuts a busy road and intersection with no buffer. Unfortunately, some drivers carelessly toss bottles and other trash over the fence. Friends of the Soldiers Home through these annual cleanups has been able to help stay on top of the litter problem in this area of the campus. We thank Daughters of the American Revolution Freedom Hill Chapter for supplying volunteers for this event!

Community clean ups

Help us beautify the grounds in and around the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C., by picking up trash and litter. We will meet just outside the grounds at the triangle park at Rock Creek Church Road and Park Place Northwest. To navigate to this location, use 580 Rock Creek Church Road N.W., Washington, D.C. , 20010. Be on time for the 10am start because we will enter a normally locked gate as a group, and late entry won’t be possible. We will supply trash bags, but bring your own garden gloves and any tools you desire like trash grabbers. Last year we had a blast at this event and filled 10 large trash bags of litter. We can’t wait to repeat this activity! Let us know you plan to come by dropping a note to Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

Community clean ups, Georgia Avenue Thrive, Volunteering

trash4Less than a week after celebrating its 200th volunteer event, Friends of the Soldiers Home launched into its 201st by picking up trash at the beautiful Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington campus. FOSH partnered with Georgia Avenue Thrive to pick up trash along the fence line in the southwest portion of the campus. The refuse collected in the area as motorists along busy Park Place carelessly tossed debris over the fence. By the end of the cleanup, volunteers picked up 10 trash bags worth of items. The prize for most creative trash item discovered went to the volunteer who found an old VCR. Volunteers also spent some time picking up trash in the neighborhood outside the Soldiers Home gates. Friends would like to thank Georgia Avenue Thrive for this wonderful partnership. When two great organizations get together, much great work gets done!
