Bowling, Jingo, Saloon NIght with Friends

After a really fun Saloon Night in March, Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers participated in three additional events during the month — Happy Hour, Bowling Night and Jingo. At each activity, we had a fantastic time connecting with the wonderful veterans at the Armed Forces Retirement Home. We also enjoyed seeing our fellow volunteers from the Nam Knights and Catholic University. April is young. To join us for some events this month — or in some other upcoming month — check out our calendar at friendsofsoldiers.org and express your interest in attending to Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

Thank you Lori for these wonderful photos!

It is always a pleasure when Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers meet up with the wonderful Armed Forces Retirement Home veterans at the bowling lanes. Our latest get together on a cold Tuesday evening in January was like many of our other ventures at the lanes. We are happy that we get to help residents use their wonderful bowling facility. We have fun rolling a few balls ourselves. And when the evening is over, we are always glad we came!

Join us for the next Bowling Night on Tuesday, Feb. 19 (the day after President’s Day) by expressing your interest with an email to our volunteer coordinator, Lori Lincoln, at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

Just before 2018 ended we snuck in one more fun event with Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC residents. Every year Geico sponsors a bowling challenge for the AFRH residents by providing food and prizes for the occasion. This year, the winning scores only differed by a few pins (107, 106, 103 and 101)! Next year we look forward to an expanded tournament for both the residents and FOSH volunteers.

Thank you volunteers who came out to FOSH Bowling Night at Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC on Tuesday! Volunteers maybe had more fun than residents did … or at least as much. We aren’t keeping score, but remember that bowling night happens the third Tuesday of each month. To become part of FOSH Bowling Night — and have fun while giving back to veterans — contact Volunteer Coordinator Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers had a great time bowling this week with residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home! We help residents to and from the lanes and bowl with those who need assistance. We do this the third Tuesday evening of each month. The Home has nice lanes and volunteers get an opportunity to roll a few balls as well! To join us on May 15, drop a line to the FOSH volunteer coordinator, Lori Lincoln, at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com.

During our first bowling event of 2018, eleven volunteers – some new, and some returning from long hiatuses – had a lot of fun helping residents enjoy themselves and win prizes! The Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC bowling lanes once again proved to be a great place for residents and community volunteers to form friendships. Volunteers loved helping residents bowl, and veterans on the winning team (where 120 was the lowest score!) chose beautiful hand-knit blankets as prizes. Do you want to join Friends of the Soldiers Home for a great time on bowling night? We always gather the third Tuesday evening of the month. Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers for bowling once each month — and we sure had fun at the September and October sessions! On Sept. 19, Geico sponsored the bowling event and there was a huge turnout of helpers from nearby Catholic University. On Oct. 17, we had another great group of young people that made the evening special. We want to thank everyone for helping out on bowling night! Our next bowling event will be Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 6pm at Soldiers Home DC. If you can join us, drop a line to FOSH Volunteer Coordinator Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com and she will tell you how it is done. Thanks to Lori for these great photos of our last two bowling sessions!

Tuesday Aug. 15 is the next Friends of the Soldiers Home bowling night — join us! You can see from these photos of the July bowling night how much fun we have. This is a wonderful way to give back to veterans, as we volunteers assist residents who would not be able to use the bowling alley on their own. Plus, you will get a chance to roll some balls of your own at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-Washington alley.

If you would like to join us for this early evening event, write FOSH Volunteer Coordinator Lori Lincoln at volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com

About a dozen Friends of the Soldiers Home volunteers came to the bowling lanes at the Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC on June 20 to help elderly veterans have a great time. Volunteers helped residents use racks to line up the perfect shot or they helped steady the the veterans as they prepared to roll a ball. Bowling With Friends always happens the third Tuesday evening of the month. If you would like to join Friends of the Soldiers Home for an upcoming evening, write volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com. You won’t be sorry. Bowling is a great way to help elderly veterans — and have fun!

Friends of the Soldiers Home had a great time assisting Armed Forces Retirement Home-DC residents at their campus bowling alley on May 16. In the first photo, volunteer John helps to steady a resident as he takes his best roll. Having John in tow kind of cramps his style, but it enables him to continue bowling his own way – standing up, and rolling the ball himself. After his turn, he coaches the Friends volunteers! In the other photos, volunteer Brenda brings resident Herbie his ball as he maps out his strategy. Herbie’s system seems to work. That’s a good roll! Join us for FOSH bowling night, always the third Tuesday evening of the month.

Our next session will be June 20. Write volunteerfriendsofsoldiers(at)gmail(dot)com if you would like to help.
